As someone who’s lived in and visited a lot of tiny homes, I’ve found that even the smallest homes can still provide a full and inspiring life — just on a smaller scale.
A 10 x 10 tiny home is pretty much as small as they come. While these uber-tiny houses aren’t for everyone, they’re a great option for minimalists, people who spend very little time at home, those with mobility limitations, or those who travel frequently. The tiniest tiny homes are also perfect for someone who’s looking for a way to simplify their budget and their lifestyle, like I did when I first embarked on my tiny life journey.
These 10 x 10 houses are square-shaped simplicity in a box. At this size, layout and furnishings are going to be modest — but, when carefully chosen, the space will be able to meet all the needs of its inhabitants. This size home isn’t a bad choice for tiny house dwellers in a temperate climate, where the outdoor space can supplement the living area with a small deck or porch.
Even in a home that’s just 10 x 10, there are plenty of design decisions to be made, like whether you want a tiny home that’s one story tall or two, if you want a loft, or whether you’d like your work space to double as a dining area.
One trademark of very tiny homes is a lot of windows, to let lots of light flow through the building, adding a feeling of spaciousness. Many tiny home designers strive to create a feeling of harmony with nature by using natural materials like stained wood.
A tiny home’s size doesn’t mean it can’t have defined living spaces. A tiny home, even one that’s 10 x 10, can allow for cooking, cleaning, bathing, sleeping, eating, working, and lounging. Make the space work by choosing furnishings that can easily be moved or tucked away — I use chairs and stools that fit completely under tables and benches — or something like a cushioned surface that can shift from reading nook to sleeping quarters.
A 10 x 10 tiny house will cost about $20,000. The cost may vary depending on design and material choices. Building a house this size may mean that you can invest in upgrades to features or materials, or you can keep it simple and invest in other areas of your life.
