Reportedly by Central Times News Network in Taiwan on June 6, Norwegian consulting firm Rystad Energy released a report on June 5 local time, stating that China has become the world's largest hydrogen producer and consumer, with an estimated 2.5 gigawatts of electrolysis stacks for hydrogen production to be installed by the end of this year. The report predicts that China can produce 220,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, 6,000 tons more than the total of other countries, exceeding the 2025 target of 200,000 tons.
The report says that China's Hydrogen Industry Development Medium-to-Long-Term Plan (2021-2035) issued on March 23, 2022, proposes that renewable energy-based hydrogen production should reach 100,000-200,000 tons per year by 2025, becoming an important part of the country's new hydrogen consumption.
Benefit by strong policy push, record-breaking renewable energy installations, and a mature automotive supply chain, China is expected to exceed its hydrogen production target and solidify its leading position in the global electrolysis stack and hydrogen-powered vehicle markets.
Analyst and Integral founder Nakanishi pointed out that the growth of green hydrogen production will help meet China's overall demand for hydrogen, and that demand is expected to surge after 2030, while production of hydrogen from fossil fuels and industrial processes is expected to decline.
