BEIJING, November 25 ( Caixin, Zhaoxuan)) - China is set to enforce its first national standard for the carbon footprint in the nonferrous metal industry starting from May 1, 2025, as announced by Chinalco on November 22.
The newly released standard, "Quantification Methods and Requirements for Greenhouse Gas Product Carbon Footprint of Electrolytic Aluminum", was spearheaded by the Zhengzhou Research Institute of Chinalco, with the participation of major players in the industry including Yun Aluminum Co., Ltd. (listed as 000878.SZ), Chalco (601600.SH), Baotou Aluminum Industry, and Chinalco Environmental Protection.
The electrolytic aluminum sector holds a crucial position in China's industrial carbon emissions landscape. It accounts for around 70 percent of the emissions within the nonferrous metal industry and approximately 5 percent of the country's total carbon emissions. Notably, by the end of 2024, domestic aluminum smelting operations will be incorporated into the national carbon market, marking a significant step in China's journey towards carbon neutrality and sustainable industrial development, which is drawing increasing attention from the global community as the country ramps up efforts in combating climate change through sector-specific regulations and standards.
