BAKU, November 16 (Reporters Liu Kai and Zhao Bing) - The High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation to Address Climate Change was convened on the 15th at the China Pavilion during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
The forum's objectives were to foster consensus among South-South countries regarding climate action, deepen cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative to address climate change, and jointly drive the process of green and low-carbon modernization.
In his address, Huang Runqiu, Minister of Ecology and Environment of China, noted that in the face of the current complex international landscape, sluggish global economic recovery, recurrent extreme weather phenomena, and the pressing climate crisis, only through the active practice of true multilateralism and the reinforcement of international cooperation can the global economy be revitalized, climate challenges be surmounted, and sustainable development goals be attained. For an extended period, China, as a responsible developing nation, has been dedicated to implementing a proactive national strategy for combating climate change. It resolutely adheres to its carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets and actively promotes initiatives such as the "Ten-Hundred-Thousand" for climate change mitigation. In recent years, China has managed to reverse the rapid growth in carbon dioxide emissions and now holds a leading position globally in terms of renewable energy installed capacity and the production and sales of new energy vehicles. Looking ahead, China will persist in enhancing South-South cooperation in climate change mitigation and offer support to relevant developing countries.
On the same day, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and the Ministry of Environment of Nigeria inked a memorandum of understanding to jointly establish a low-carbon demonstration zone in Lekki.
This forum was jointly organized by the Center for International Cooperation & Exchange of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Center for Strategic Research on Climate Change Response & International Cooperation, and the Yantai Municipal Government. It represents the twelfth high-level forum on South-South cooperation against climate change organized by the Chinese delegation since 2011.
