7075 has been tried repeatedly in aircraft applications but it just can't be relied on because of SCC (Stress Corrosion Cracking). The yield point and the ultimate yield point grow ever closer together as intergranular corrosion develops with no obvious trace visible on the outside of the material. It's strong as hell for the weight but repeated stress near the yield point makes for a very short service life.I was using a piece as a clamp for milling parts and was cranking it down till it flexed slightly, below the plastic yield point. One day when I reefed on it it broke with a loud bang and no sign of plastic deformation.Of course it broke at the stress concentration produced by the hole even though it was countersunk on both sides. That wasn't the cause though. It isn't a suitable material where the stress repeatedly approaches more than 50% of the plastic yield (or elastic yield). It's great for things that need to be as light and strong as possible for some eventuallity like a seat belt bracket or seat frame that will probably never be called upon to do it's real job more than once.They have been trying for decades to find a 7000 series alloy that has all the desirable characteristics of 7075 without the serious drawbacks.
