I believe the street name came about because when the water mains were tapped they didnt have enough room to use a regular fitting so the had to make one side of an elbow fit into the tap. Chris

when water mains were being run down a street, the installers would put a tee in front of a house. the branch of the tee was facing up. into the branch they would put an elbow with male threads on one end and female threads on the other. so it was known as a "street" elbow.

So does this mean that when cast iron came along(which came first the chicken or the egg)that the fitting that had a male end a female end was a street fitting as well???

CAst iron was still installed in the streets, and the taps were either made into the pipe with a corporation cock or a saddle. But by that time the name had already stuck to the fitting so it was immaterial.

The "street fitting" was developed by Alexander Street, who was a steam fitter in Chicago in the early 1900's. He was good friends with my grandfather (also a steam fitter in Chicago), and godfather to my 92 year old dad who conveyed the origin me and my brothers 40 years ago.
