BPE is lightweight and easy to move the shield. BPE is particularly useful for shielding low and medium neutron flux levels that do not encounter excessively high temperatures, and the recommended limit is 180°F (82°C). Due to the high boron content, it shows excellent thermal neutron attenuation ability and significantly reduces the capture gamma dose. Fast neutrons are shielded by a very high concentration (96%). Another important advantage of it is its low cost.
The boron-containing polyethylene board with 2%-40 boron carbide is available, with various shapes, including boards, bricks, and woodworking tools that can be easily formed and cut. For special applications, it may be desirable to use a boron loading other than 5%.
